EPDM Rubber Roof is a durable and weather-resistant material, popular for flat or low-slope roofs. It offers excellent temperature tolerance and UV resistance, though it can be more susceptible to punctures and may require additional coatings for heat reflection.

Material:  Ethylene Propylene Diene Terpolymer (EPDM) rubber.
Use: Popular for flat or low-slope roofs.

Minimum Slope 1/4:12
Suitable Shed Models All sheds
Average Cost
Item Estimated cost
1 sq ft EPDM Rubber Roofing $1.5
1 gallon EPDM to wood adhesive $50
1 gallon reflective top coat $50
Advantages
  • Temperature tolerance -60°F to 300°F.
  • High wind resistance.
  • Excellent in various weather conditions.
  • Not easily damaged by UV rays.
Disadvantages
  • Black EPDM absorbs heat; white EPDM is available but costlier.
  • Can puncture easily.
Installation Notes
  • Special adhesive needed for bonding with wood.
  • Use elastomeric roof coating & sealant to change color and add strength.
Metal Shed Roofing

Metal roofing comes in two main types: Exposed Fasteners and Standing Seam – Snap Lock (Hidden Fasteners). Exposed fastener metal roofs are cheaper and easier to install, while standing seam metal roofs offer better durability and aesthetics but require more complex installation.

Types: Exposed Fasteners and Standing Seam – Snap Lock (Hidden Fasteners)

Minimum Slope for Exposed Fasteners 1:12
Minimum Slope for Hidden Fasteners 1/2: 12
Suitable Shed Models All sheds for Hidden Fasteners; California, Sydni, all garden and storage sheds for Exposed option
Exposed Fastener Metal Roofing
  • Underlayment: felt, self-adhering membrane, or synthetic sheet.
  • Flashing or Drip Edge: Optional.
  • Wind Resistance: Good but decreases with time.
  • Lifespan: 20 - 60 years, with regular fastener resealing or replacement.
  • Color Options: Clear metal, white, various shades of gray, green, red, etc.
Average Cost
Item Estimated cost
1 sq ft metal panel $1.2
1 sq ft ridge, end, and side trim $5
Box of colored screws (250 units) 10x1-1/2” $30
1 ft inside or outside closure $0.25
Advantages
  • Cost-effective.
  • Easy to install.
  • Readily available.
  • Variety of colors available.
Disadvantages
  • Minimum slope 1:12.
  • Longevity issues (gaskets last ~15 years).
  • Not an ultimate choice for Moderna or Solana sheds – unless gaskets are monitored and replaced as they age.
Hidden Fastener (Standing Seam - Snap Lock) Metal Roofing

This type of roofing is difficult to work with and requires working with a porfessional installer. This is not a DIY-friendly option. Most companies work on the big projects and to place a custom order for a shed roof might be difficult or expensive, and is best combined with a larger project.

  • Underlayment: felt, self-adhering membrane, or synthetic sheet.
  • Flashing or Drip Edge: Optional.
  • Wind Resistance: Excellent
  • Lifespan: 80 years, likely will outlive your shed.
  • Color Options: Clear metal, white, various shades of gray, green, red, etc.
Average Cost
Item Estimated cost
1 sq ft metal panel $5
Labor Area dependent
Advantages
  • Minimum slope ½ :12.
  • Can last up to 80 years.
  • Better expansion and contraction handling.
  • Aesthetically pleasing.
Disadvantages
  • More difficult to install.
  • Requires special order or experienced crew.
Overall Advantages of Metal Roof
  • Long lifespan, especially for standing seam.
  • Strong wind and weather resistance.
  • Aesthetically pleasing with hidden fasteners.
  • Variety of colors and finishes available.
Overall Disadvantages of Metal Roof
  • Higher initial cost, especially for standing seam.

PVC Roof Panels are made from polycarbonate material and are known for their strength, durability, and transparency. They are commonly used for decks, patios, and garages, providing a balance between protection and natural light. PVC roof panels are an excellent choice for shed roofing in hot climates where light color roofing is important.

Use: Popular for outdoor structures.

Minimum Slope 1:12
Suitable Shed Models California, Sydni, all garden and storage sheds
Average Cost
Item Estimated cost
1 sq ft PVC roof panel $1.3
1 in. Hex-Head Wood Screws with EPDM washer $7
24 in. Horizontal Plastic Roof Closure Strips $50
Advantages
  • Transparent, allowing natural light.
  • Strong and durable.
  • UV protection.
Disadvantages
  • Potential for color fading.
  • Expansion and contraction may cause leaks, seals have to be monitored.
